Welcome to the website of Neubrandenburg. We aim to provide all the information that you are looking for, as well as other useful notes about our Town of the Four Gates on the Tollensesee. And of course we have also included some pictures of our Mecklenburg Lake District. Neubrandenburg is the commercial and cultural centre of the eastern part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – a town that combines an attractive lakeland landscape with art, culture, sport and fun. Today Neubrandenburg has a population of around 66,000 and exercises key functions in the fields of commerce, culture, education and health for over 400,000 people in a region covering approximately 6,000 km². Easily accessible by car or public transport and situated at the intersection of several major roads, with easy access to the A20 and to the airport situated on the outskirts of the town, Neubrandenburg has developed into an industrial and service centre, with medium-sized industrial companies in particular exerting considerable economic power. The poet and author Fritz Reuter praised Neubrandenburg as “the pearl of the empire of Mecklenburg-Strelitz”, as he modestly described the most beautiful part of what at that time was a Grand Duchy. Our history goes back over more than 760 years, and – as in Reuter’s time – our more distant and more recent past can still be traced today in the brick Gothic architecture, including the medieval fortifications which are unique in Europe and have been preserved almost complete, along with the old houses incorporated into the town walls (Wiekhäuser), the Fangelturm tower and the four town gates. The Church of St Mary (Marienkirche) is particularly fine: it now functions as a concert venue – one of the most unusual concert halls in Germany, with fabulous acoustics. As the home of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonia it offers not only top-class musical experiences but also the marvellous atmosphere created by the North German brick Gothic style. Neubrandenburg is a town of sport. Olympic, World and European champions have built up its international reputation over the past 40 years. Over ten thousand adults, children and young people take part regularly in recreational and leisure sports in their home town. I hope that you enjoy an interesting virtual journey of discovery. At the same time I should like to invite you to experience the real-life version for yourself. Come and visit us in Neubrandenburg, the Town of the Four Gates on the Tollensesee. We look forward to seeing you!  |
